Start with the shelf layout you actually need

A shelf containing a few small pots is the most natural starting point. Separate short bars let you place light sources over distinct sections instead of relying on one central fixture. For example, an arrangement with plants toward the front and back may call for two parallel positions rather than a single row down the middle. That is a layout option, not proof that a particular spacing supplies enough light.

A second scenario is a narrow bookcase converted into an open plant display. Short fixtures can be easier to position between uprights than a long rigid panel. Measure the usable interior rather than the outside width of the furniture, and include the room required for connectors and cables. A nominal one-foot bar still needs a complete installation envelope.

A third use is a small propagation station whose contents change over time. Removable pots and trays can be regrouped below the installed bars, provided the growing requirements remain compatible. Plan the station around the containers you will actually use, including their saucers, instead of buying lights first and trying to fit an unrelated tray underneath.

The important cost comparison is the completed station. Include a suitable support, timer if needed and any manufacturer-approved accessories your layout requires. A short-bar pack can be attractive when the shelf is already available. If you must build an entirely new stand around it, compare that total with a longer integrated fixture before deciding.

The main drawback is that modularity gives you more installation decisions. Four bars can mean several attachment points and connecting leads to manage. Then check the connector space, included leads, approved attachment method and remaining growing height. Compare those details with your actual shelf drawing. For a seed tray, give particular attention to the outer rows; for a houseplant collection, account for unequal pot and leaf heights.
